The epigenome, considered the “software” that runs the genome,  consists of chemical modifications to the DNA and its associated proteins that regulate gene transcr!ption.  SOT Past President Cheryl Lyn Walker, PhD, ATS, Fellow AAAS discusses how the epigenetic programming that occurs during development influences health and disease across the life course, focusing on how certain chemical exposures, particularly during vulnerable windows of time during development, disrupt this programming to increase risk of disease.
